As I write these words the tragic events of September 11 are still fresh in my mind. The question that most Americans want answered is how could something like this happen? It appears that the cutbacks in defense during the 90's led to a lowered level of preparedness, which allowed the attacks to be successful. Whatever the reason the end result is that thousands were killed and the United States will have to spend trillions of dollars to bring those responsible to justice as well as prevent further attacks.
What does any of this have to do with Nutrition and Health? Actually the lessons that can be learned from the September 11 tragedy are ones that can be applied to just about everything in life. The attacks demonstrate that nothing in life should be taken for granted and a nation should always practice vigilance and maintain a strong defense. In a similar fashion Health is something that should never be taken for granted. Most illnesses that can destroy the quality of your life or even kill you can be prevented. A small investment today in proper nutrition can yield big returns.
If all of this sounds familiar that is because this lesson has been learned before and summed up in the old wise tale that said, "A ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Unfortunately the lessons learned by previous generations are quickly forgotten by succeeding ones and health is no exception. The fact that trillions of dollars are spent each year on drugs and healthcare and yet the overall level of health seems to continue to decline just exemplifies how little this lesson has been learned by the generation of today. I don't know about you but I am going to continue to try to learn this lesson and spend a little now on vitamins and supplements in order to avoid the heavy price that I might otherwise have to pay later.
