QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Q.  A friend of mine told me that taking a multi-vitamin is a waste because they do not get absorbed by the body. He said to try dropping a tablet in a glass of water to see if it would dissolve. I tried it and nothing happened. What do you think?
A.  Placing a vitamin tablet in a glass of water is not a very good test because what happens in the body during digestion is much different. A much better test would be to place a vitamin tablet in a glass of hydrochloric acid. If you try this you will see that it does not take long before the vitamin tablet disappears.
There seems to be quite a few ridiculous rumors out there about how the body is not supposed to be able to dissolve a vitamin tablet. I have also heard the one about an x-ray tech who supposedly sees undigested vitamins in the X-rays. I think my favorite story is about someone who found vitamins in what came out of a Port-A-Pot. I don't know about you but someone who picks through what comes out of a Port-A-Pot is not someone I am going to listen to when it comes to my health.
As long as your body is producing the normal amount of digestive enzymes then you should easily be able to dissolve and absorb the vitamins and minerals in a tablet. I recommend that you take your multi-vitamin tablet during a meal when you have a full digestive process going. I also recommend that you avoid anti-acids, as they will not only prevent the breakdown of a vitamin tablet but also the food in your meal.
Q.  My Church is going to set up a workout room and we are trying to decide what type of equipment to purchase. Any suggestions?
A.  Choosing the right equipment for a gym will depend on the fitness goals of the people who are going to be using the facility the most. If you have a large congregation and ample funds then you will probably want a good blend of machines and free weights that will allow all different levels of people to be able to work out safely and efficiently. Before you blow a lot of money on expensive machines you need to go and visit several gyms that are similar in size to what you are going to build. Pay close attention to the equipment that seems to be the most popular. There are some exercises that work better with machines and some that need to be done with free weights. You can quickly get a feel for what works best for different exercises by simple observing the members at a large gym.
If your church is small and funds are tight then free weights may be your best option. Equipment sales people will try to convince you that free weights are more dangerous but just as many injuries happen with machines. The key to safety with free weights is informing your members about how to properly workout. I was once a member of a club while I was in College that was predominently free weights and had over 500 members. This club existed for over 20 years and never had a serious injury even though the room was completely unattended. As long as people use common sense with free weights there are usually no problems and the results you get are far superior to machines.(For more about how free weights are superior to machines read our article Machines vs. Free Weights)
